I was parked outside the Greggs on Kirkstall Road, waiting for Alice and Avril.
In the glare of the sun on the dashboard, I saw a spider walking towards me.

Using my right hand, I wound down the driver’s side window.
I felt the warm breeze move like bathwater around my neck.

Using my left hand, I allowed the spider to climb onto my fingers.
I let it gently fall down to the concrete and move off like a drunk.

Someone watching from a distance mistakenly thought they saw me littering,
And shouted obscenities, and although I know I did nothing wrong, I am still upset about it.
